BATTLE OF BUTCHERS:

GCG/WIL SPLIT—4 one run games, 3 go into extras

Vs Gotham City  2, Williamsburg 1

#1 Two solo BP HRs by Branyan (5) and Chavez (16) waste a fine effort by Odalis Perez (4-7, 3.49). Burgess were undone in 6th when they had runners on first and 3rd and no out but could not score. On an attempted suicide squeeze, Chris “A” bunter Singleton popped into DP; then Burnitz choked on his own BP HR chance (1-16).  Gargoyles such as Felipe ss4e17 Lopez and Russ Branyan rf5e9 turned in some web gems to help Astacio (4-6, 6.25).

#2 Burgesses 4-12-0, Gargoyles 3-7-0, 10 innings

Burgesses storm back from 3-1 deficit with 2 in 9th off Shawn Estes and then beat Kaz Sasaki (L,1-2, 2.38, BS,3) in 10th. Two injuries had Gargoyles with outfield of Jones-lf-4, Branyan cf-5, and Kreuter rf-4. Lead off hit in 10th was an x-chance that Branyan muffed. Next was an x-chance that I believe Nunez blew. Boone followed with single. Santana won (2-1, 3.65). HR-Chipper (5)

#3 Gargoyles 7-12-0, Burgesses 6-14-2, 15 innings Burgesses rally from 5-2 deficit to tie at 6 with Burnitz HR (11). Finally, Gargoyles draw 2 BBs in 15th, the latter to walk in winning run. 4 innings of no-hit relief by Santana wasted. Hawkins won 4-1, 3.00. Save-Nelson (1, 6.19)  L-Looper 0-1, 3.38. HR-Guillen (1) Bagwell (14)

#4 Burgesses 4-9-0, Gargoyles 3-9-2, 10 innings  Lady Luck pays back Burgesses as Branyan blows a 1-18 BP HR chance then in bottom of 10th, Branyan rf5 blows x-chance allowing Wilton Guerrero to scamper home with 4th run. WIL tied game in 6th converting a 1-11 chance at home just barely (catcher blocking plate rule came into effect, safe was 1-14 –Zaun c4 at plate, “13” came up). Looper W 1-1, 3.14  Hawkins L, 4-2, 3.14.

Waukesha @ Williamsburg: Burgesses 6-9-0, Keglers 5-9-1

#1 Thome jerks a grand slam (24) lifting Burgesses. Randall Simon error was critical. WIL withstands bases-loaded rally in top of 9th; one run scores on wild pitch but Eischen (F6) nails Edmonds for save, his 4th, 1.88. Santana won it, 3-1, 3.58. Rodriguez L,0-2, 2.88. Arthur Rhodes (BS,3, 2.19) burned by Thome. HR-Mabry (1) a PH job. Jeter (6).

#2 Burgesses 8-13-0, Keglers 5-12-1  Everything came up snake eyes as Burgesses hang “8 spot” on the Rocket in very 1st inning and then hang on. We even convert a 1-3 chance on a cut-off throw in the first inning.

Clemens L,6-4, 4.76. Sosa won it in relief 3-2 as Maroth faltered, 4.81.

#3 Burgesses 4-8-0, Keglers 2-6-0  Sparks (W, 3-6, 6.83) went 5 IP and Santana (S, 4, 3.48) 4 IP to shut down Kegler offense. Martinez had 2 solo shots (8) and Jacque Jones drilled his 11th. Padilla L, 6-4, 5.74.

#1 Burgesses 9-14-1, Braves 1-5-2  Tom Lampkin broken open a tense 2-1 game with a 3 run jerk (7) off reliever Josh Beckett. We padded our stats further and wound up with a nice win. Kirk Saarloos improved his ERA (0-6, 11.57) as he allowed only 4 runs in 6+. Maroth now 5-4, 5.96. Thome HR (25).

#2 Burgesses 5-8-3, Braves 3-5-2  Thome had a 3 run blast (26) and Santana followed Sparks (W,4-6, 6.43) with 3 2/3 of no-hit relief (S,5, 3.28).

Stephens was collared for loss, 1-3, 6.55.

#3 Burgesses 3-8-0, Braves 2-5-0  Nip and tuck game saw Braves slip ahead in top of 8th on Flaherty’s solo blast (2) but Sullivan (L, 1-1, 5.03) yielded HR to Boone (6) to tie and then in 9th  he faced 2 LHBs Burnitz and Singleton who singled and tripled, game over. Looper W,2-1, 2.88.

#1 Knights 2-6-1, Burgesses 1-8-1  We fail to convert our chances. Byrd flies the distance (W,3-6,3.78) and beats Dessens (L,4-6,5.14)

#2 Burgesses 8-16-1, Knights 6-8-0  WIL rallies from 6-1 deficit as bullpen shuts down Knights. Big blow was 3 run jerk by Bellhorn (9) off Worrell.

WP-Cornejo 3-1, 5.93. LP-Worrell 0-5, 5.48, BS,2. HR-Varitek 2 (10), Jones (13) Thome (27)

#3 Burgesses 8-10-0, Knights 2-6-1 Burgesses play Longball: Thome (28) Boone (7) Singleton (2) and Burnitz (12). WP-Santana 4-1, 3.06 LP-Ashby 5-4, 4.22.
