WILLIAMSBURG GAZETTE

August 2003

Syracuse @ Williamsburg

Game #1 Syracuse whitewashes us 7-0 behind Randy Johnson. Game was 0-0 as Dessens was matching the Big Unit but Elmer did falter in 6th and then Burgess bullpen did its sinkhole imitation and made the game a blowout.

Game #2 SKY blows one big time. They are winning 9-2 after 4 and ˝ but proceed to lose 12-11 in 10 innings. Chris Singleton, Jacque Jones, and Jim Thome had back-to-back-back jacks in the 6th to put us ahead 11-9. Jacque Jones had hit a 3 run shot in the fifth to bring us to 9-6. Rafael Palmeiro tied it with a 2 run jerk off Johan Santana (blown save) then who but Jorge Sosa gets his 12th relief win when Cruz 1b4e25 muffs chance in 10th allowing winning run to score.

Game #3 Williamsburg wins 6-5. X-chart goofs aid cause—Brian Giles blew 2 for singles. And there was at least one more, + 2 errors, one by Giles and Banks each. Sweet Jorge Sosa earned his 3rd save when Johan Santana got knocked around again.

Portland @ Williamsburg

Game #1 saw Muggsy Bogues stuff Michael Jordan …or the equivalent thereof as Jimmy Haynes threw a complete game and beat Curt Schilling 8-2. We got some more help from x-chart when Griffey misplayed a 2 out fly for a double plating 2 runs. A wild pitch had put runners on 2nd and 3rd. Thome mashed #42 to cap scoring.

Game#2 John Mabry spelled a resting Jim Thome perfectly with 2 HRs, including a 3 run shot in bottom of 8th to win game 4-3. Johan Santana has 3rd straight poor outing as GRA loads bases with one out in 9th but Jorge Sosa slams door for save #4.

Game #3 Grays play Steve Sparks like a fiddle scoring a run just about every inning in total 7 runs in 7 innings of work. Deadhead Freddy Garcia was jamming and shut down Burgesses bats. Griffey and Kearns with HRs.

Game #4 Odalis Perez pitches shutout ball for 8 innings before tiring. Johan Santana tries to preserve shutout but gets knocked around again; he’s good enough though to finish game as Burgess win 9-3. Key blow was a 3 run HR by Macias early in game. Odalis himself hit a 2 run blast in 8th. Zambrano ineffective: 7 runs in 6+ innings.

Silver @ Williamsburg

Game #1 For a while it looked like Chacon would beat us but Burgess explode for 4 runs in 7th to take a 6-3 lead; win 6-4. Julio Santana won it in relief and shaky Johan Santana did pitch well enough to earn save

Game #2 Preston Wilson the RF had very bad day. Not only was he 0-3 but he committed 2 errors leading to 6 unearned runs as Burgesses dumped Silver 7-1. Jimmy Haynes pitched his 2nd straight complete game. In first inning, WIL had HRs by Jones, Lampkin, Karim Garcia.

Game #3 Burgesses nip Silver 4-3. Loaiza sharp but Mantei gives up 2 runs to tie and then Ascensio yields a run but SIL gets it back to knot game at 3 in top of 9th. Macias gets aboard in bottom of 9th; he has 75% for steal and 78% to get lead but about 20% out trying. Yes, a gutty move by the manager and he gets the error too and winds up on 3rd base. Ascensio then obliged with wild pitch, game over WIL wins, WIL sweeps. Jorge Sosa wins again in relief going to 13-3. He got out of 1 out runners on 2nd and 3rd jam in top of 9th.

San Bernardino @ Williamsburg

Jimmy Haynes wins his 3rd in a row but no CG this time as he needs relief help. Still, the Burgesses win handily 9-4, up 8-1 until late in game. Burnitz had 3 run dinger. Garland walked 7. Jimmy Haynes got 2 rbi and Desi Relaford missed x-chance at critical time.

Game #2 Stampede nips WIL 2-1. Kyle Lohse does great and then King and Foulke stop a couple of mini-rallies. We manage just 6 hits. Wilkerson’s solo HR (14) won it.

Game #3 Back and forth game ends with WIL winning 6-5. Sparks and Suppan both are kicked around. D. James loses on 2 BBs, single and sac fly in 8th. Interestingly, HAL walked Jacque Jones to get bases loaded for Jim Thome in 8th but Thome struck out to end 8th. Jorge Sosa got 5th save. Karim Garcia had 2 HRs, 3 hits, 4 rbi. Remember, he gets hot in August so this is very realistic.

Waukesha @ Williamsburg

Game #1 Steve Sparks improved to 6-14, 7.11 beating Roger Clemens and Waukesha. Final score 12-4. WIL won despite 4 errors. We continue to get timely hitting. Thome had 2 HRs and Jacque Jones also had one. Reliever Stanton was bombed.

Game #2 Down 6-3 in 6th, WIL rallies and wins 9-6. Mabry jacked a HR subbing for Thome and then Thome himself pinch hits the tie-breaking 2 run HR. Odalis Perez was roughed up but bullpen held Keglers in check and picked up league leading 35th win.

Burnitz ALMOST hit for cycle: double triple and 3 run HR. I have only had one player in Strat hit for cycle: Pat Sheridan in a retro league.

Game #3 WIL was one out away from sweep in 9th but as I have been saying August has not been Johan Santana’s month---he imploded and WAU scored in 8 in 9th to win 13-7.

Burnitz had another 3 run HR.
